2/11/10 - Garth will be appearing at Gods & Monsters at Richard Hugo House
Date:
Friday, February 19, 2010 - 7:30pm
From the crucifixes hanging above our beds to the Bogeymen hiding under them, gods and monsters have always occupied considerable real estate in the human psyche. But sometimes a mattress and box spring are all that separate the two. Gods of all faiths have dispatched locusts, hail and frogs, induced famines and instituted curses. And who was really the monster in Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein"--the poor, misunderstood creature whose hideous exterior masked a very human heart, or the man who usurped God's role by creating him? Today the line dividing the godly from the grotesque is blurrier than ever as technology hands us godlike powers--cloning! Bio-engineering! Artificial Intelligence!--opening possibilities that Mary Shelley couldn't have imagined. But just because we can do something doesn't mean we should--what happens when, as Joseph Conrad described it, our "inner evil" equals our "outer good"?
Garth will be reading a new and never published story.

10/22/09 - Alexander Rossi Winning for Team Enzo
09/02/09
Young racecar driver Alexander Rossi has been on a tear of late. Sporting GoEnzo.com logos, he stormed to his second win of the season today in the twelfth round of the International Formula Master (IFM) Series at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.
Starting fourth, the young American was up to second as the field of IFM single-seaters charged through the first corner, before the safety car was deployed following an incident on the grid.
IFM Talent Support Program (TSP) driver Alexander Sims had been left stranded on his P3 slot as the lights went out, with AR Motorsport's Kelvin Snoeks unable to avoid him, resulting in three laps of safety car period.
Rossi took the lead of the race a lap after the restart, racing to the checkered flag unchallenged, despite a strong drive from Jenzer Motorsport's Fabio Leimer who finished the 12-lap race less than a second behind.
Rossi: "I had a good start with Alexander [Sims] dropping out; I could focus on passing Josef [Kral] quickly. Then the safety car was out for three laps and I worked very hard to keep the tyres and brakes as warm as possible. I had a very good restart; I was able to get the lead straight away and we almost had a 1-2 for the team but getting both cars in the top three is pretty great too."

Garth’s submission was his recipe for Clams with Sausage, Beans, and Pasta. He’s been cooking it and embellishing it for his wife since they were first married. Since he and Drella are still together, it’s safe to say that the recipe is a good one!

The Oregonian picked The Art of Racing in the Rain for its annual list of top Northwest Books. Keeping Garth company are Terry Toedtemeier and John Laursen, Ursula K. LeGuin, Kim Barnes, and Thomas Hager.
"Garth Stein's third novel, 'The Art of Racing in the Rain,' is a fable with a heart. Like its best-selling brethren, it casts a sleeping spell on the readers' native cynicism and persuades us to dust off old questions about faith and humankind's better traits." --OregonLive.com

06/12/08 - The Art of Racing in the Rain makes NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams' summer reading list
07/15/08 - Garth to Race in the Mazda Grand Prix of Portland
FACT VS FICTION ON THE RACE TRACK
Northwest authors race for the cup at the Mazda Grand Prix and join teams to support the Oregon Humane Society.
Award-winning Northwest authors Garth "The Art of Racing in the Rain" Stein and Sam "Fast Guys, Rich Guys, and Idiots" Moses will be battling for bragging rights at the Mazda MX-5 Cup race at the Mazda Grand Prix of Portland on Sunday July 27th.
While the MX-5 Cup race will have at least two dozen other racers, Sam and Garth are competing for bragging rights as the highest placed scribe. This race-within-a-race is generating intense interest both within the Oregon literary community, and auto racing folks. Some good natured trash talk between the competitors is already starting to build. Sam notes that "The graphics on our MX-5s will be our book jackets, which means my car will have a checkered flag on it, and Garth's car will feature a dog; tells you something about their drivers, right there." Garth observed that "Hemingway said, "The only three real sports are auto racing, mountain climbing and bull fighting. Well, I have great respect for my competitor, Sam Moses. But at the end of the day, he should stick to mountain climbing, because in the sport of auto racing, I will prove to be the champion, and Mount Hood isn't that far away...."
Garth's novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain, (Harper) is currently on the New York Times bestseller list for fiction. Sam's 1986 epic, Fast Guys, Rich Guys, and Idiots, is considered a classic among racers and was re-released last year by the University of Nebraska Press.
Fans of race cars, readers, journalists, idiots, and philosopher dogs, are encouraged to join the fun at Portland International Raceway and other venues in Portland.
Thursday, July 24th from 6:00PM to 8:00PM: Sam and Garth will sign copies of their books at Auto Town Mazda (16903 SE McLoughlin Blvd. Milwaukie, OR) All proceeds from book sales that evening will be donated to the Oregon Humane Society (OHS).
Friday July 25th: Sam and Garth will visit the Oregon Humane Society to meet their adoptable namesakes. This is in conjunction with the Mazda supported "Adopt-A Shelter Animal" program.
Sunday, July 27th: Round #3 of the 2008 SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup, a feature race of the Mazda Grand Prix of Portland at the Portland International Raceway West Delta Park 1940 North Victory Boulevard Portland. The race will be at 12:30pm (PDT) Practice and qualifying will take place on July 25th and 26th. The race will be televised nationally on DirecTV & DISH Network beginning the week of August 18th with additional regional broadcasts.
Tickets: $15/day.
