Book Clubs

If you are interested in a Virtual Visit (web chat) with Garth Stein we'll be happy to help you arrange something. As you might imagine, we get hundreds of requests each year and are only able to fit in a couple dozen. Therefore, we ask that the book club consider a few guidelines.

iChat with Garth Stein
Virtual Visit Guidelines

  • There needs to be at least 20 people in the audience.
  • The cost to arrange the Virtual Visit needs to be covered by the venue/club. This is usually about $500.
  • It generally works best if the club is affiliated with a library, school, or some such, or creates a temporary relationship with a public venue in order to better help them meet our guidelines. However, if a private club can meet the guidelines, we will try to make it work.
  • We ask that you carefully review the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) on the Garth Stein website so you can ask new and unique questions that aren't already answered elsewhere. This will make for a more interesting and fulfilling dialogue for you and Garth.
  • Please allow at least two month's lead time for us to work you into Garth's schedule.
  • The Virtual Visit will last about 30 minutes so plan accordingly.
  • Test your technology and software prior to the Virtual Visit.
Please to arrange the Virtual Visit.

"In a word, Garth's video chat with our club was fabulous! The book club members thought I was doing something for work when I was on the phone, so the surprise part worked out unbelievably well - they didn't realize what was going on until Garth's face appeared on the screen! He exceeded my expectations in terms of being engaging, educational, interesting, insightful and funny.

Thank you for your assistance with setting up this iChat. It helped immensely."

"Please pass along our sincere, heartfelt thanks to Garth Stein for joining us during our Racing in the Rain Writers Retreat. Our Skype meeting with him was like going to heaven for a half hour. When Garth hung up, we let out a collective sigh! We had all read The Art of Racing in the Rain at least once, and many of us have re-read it. We had discussed it as readers and analyzed it as writers. We all agree it's at least a masterpiece. To be able to visit with Garth in a way that seemed like he was sitting with us at the kitchen table (we were all at the kitchen table, with a laptop on the kitchen counter) was beyond beyond! So relaxed and personal. He was most warm and helpful and inspiring. In short, the Skype visit was the highlight of our writers retreat in Sarasota, which also included a visit to a Zen garden, a discussion at a private beach on Sarasota Bay (where one man asked if we were having a Bible study!) and other fantastic experiences. Thanks so much for helping make Garth available to us. We all took away important thoughts and writing tips. What a nice man!"
